ANGEL & ROYAL
“The Angel still stands as a monument to hospitality, probably the oldest surviving Inn in England. It was originally intended for the traders and pilgrims who thronged the Roman Road of Ermine Street, stopping off in this bustling market town. King John, the Templars’ particular patron was only one of several royal guests who had occasion to stay here. Now that the structure has been returned to something resembling
its medieval interior, the connection with the templars is evoked more than ever.” In search of the Knights Templar

HAZLEWOOD CASTLE
The recorded history of Hazlewood Castle starts with the Doomsday book with the entry for Sir Mauger the Vavasour who resided in the Hall of Thane at Hazlewood.
In 1283 Sir William, as a result of the Baron Wars applied to the King to crenellate and fortify his Manor. The licence was granted in 1290 transforming the Hall of Thane into a Castle.
Later on in 1461 right in front of the Castle the War of the Roses took place on Towton Moor with which the River Cock ran red with blood many days after the bloodiest battle on these shores had ceased. The Tudor reign followed and when Henry outlawed the Catholic
church, priest holes and an underground escape passage were added to prevent the priest and anyone aiding or abetting being hung drawn and quartered!
After 900 years the Vavasour family left the Castle and became celebrated wine makers in New Zealand. (The Castle exclusively stocks some of their award winning wines)
During the second world war the Castle was requisitioned as a maternity hospital and this was
celebrated recently with 1500 babies reuniting at the Castle for a wonderfully emotional day with some incredible personal stories which are all chronicled in a Hazlewood Babies book.
Thereafter the Castle belonged to the Fawcett family with Mr Fawcett marrying the great grand daughter of the Vavasours. The Castle then became a renowned retreat for the Carmelite Friars upon the recommendation of the owners at the time, the Hart family, to the Bishop of Leeds.
There is plenty more as the Castle oozes this rich history as you explore these moving and very real tales.
